Adding value your home doesn’t have to drain your bank account. There are a few things that you can do yourself even on the smallest budgets. Not only will the overall look of your home improve you can add value at the same time. Here’s a few of my favorite tips:
Get a home inspection
This is a great place to start. By identifying any little problems you can address them before they become bigger issues.
Paint
Give your home a fresh look or an entirely new look and feel. Painting is inexpensive and the easiest way to give your home a transformation. Stick to neutral colors and of course zero VOC paint. Also ditch the popcorn ceilings. In as little as a weekend you can remove a dated look.
You be the designer
Look through design magazines and watch those HGTV shows. Look for the latest design trends and see what works for your home.
Upgrade your appliances
Now you don’t have to go out and buy all new appliances, especially if you’re working on a tight budget. Update the older appliances first and make sure the colors don’t compete. As with the paint keep the colors neutral. White and stainless-steel work best
Deep clean
The first place to start in the deep clean is to declutter. This will give the home that open feeling and makes it look and feel bigger. Then get to the cleaning. Tackle your normal everyday chores like dusting, vacuuming, and mopping. Also be sure to do the not so normal cleaning such as vents, baseboards, cabinets, blinds, and doorknobs. Steam-clean the carpets, wash the walls and windows, and replace any broken windows or screens as well. This is an easy do it yourself project but if it’s not your thing you can hire a professional as well.
Update the bathroom
Like your kitchen, you don’t have to get crazy here. Update the little things like fixtures, mirrors and paint. The little things will make all the difference
Brighten up the place
Switch your lightbulbs to LED. You’ll brighten your home as well as save money in energy costs. Replace any outdated light fixtures and ceiling fans. Having updated fixtures are more efficient and will save you money in the long run.
Curb Appeal
You can go one of two ways here or both.
You can relandscape and plant trees and bushes to create shade and keep your house cooler in the summer. You can also choose drought tolerant plants that require less maintenance and water.
The second way is basically a deep clean for your lawn. Do all the little things such as trim the hedges, manicure bushes, edge around the walkways, or fertilizing to make that lawn extra green.
Whichever way you choose a fresh new look will most definitely do wonders for your home.
Whether you’re thinking about selling your house or not these are my favorite budget friendly ways to increase the value of your home. If you need more tips or thinking about selling your house give me a call, I can help.
